Spelunking Challenge: Lava Tube Happy Hours

While many caves form by the slow erosion of minerals over time, lava tubes are a speedy form of cave creation. These igneous rock caves are created when lava flows out from an active vent. In the right conditions, as molten rock flows through its channel, the outer part of the flow will cool and harden. As the liquid core continues to flow away, only the hard crust is left, creating a cave.

There are lava tubes all over the world! Hawaii boasts some of the most impressive ones, including the Kazumura Cave, which is both the longest and deepest lava tube in the world, measuring in at 40.7 miles (65.5 km) long and 3,614 feet (1,102 m) deep.

Another notable lava tubes is the Manjanggul in South Korea, which contains rare lava pillars – hollow channels inside the tube where water could escape as the tube formed.

Other more common interior structures include lavacicles – a type of stalactite made of lava that hardened as it dripped down from the ceiling, and sometimes has a “shark tooth” appearance. Helictites, a type of twisting tubular stalactite, can also be found in some lava tubes.

You can channel your inner lava tube as you enter Accuracy Happy Hour! Follow the branches from one end of the cube to the other, adding all the pieces along the way, and you’ll be sure to get those accuracy results you’ve been dreaming of!

Session 1 – 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM on 3/27
Session 2 – 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on 3/28
Session 3 – 10:00 PM to midnight on 3/28

Mentors: You are still allowed to mentor people during these time windows. Please just use your best judgment as to whether someone is asking you for basic newbie help vs. trying to have you boost their accuracy on cube after cube.

Scythes: Please avoid scything during these time windows. Even though accuracy for this will be retroactively calculated, we would prefer to go with accuracy based on players’ raw tracing. By the time this challenge is scored, don’t worry, admins will have corrected consensus as needed.
