Mammal Mania: Primate Trivia

Intelligence can be measured in a variety of ways, and many highly intelligent mammals from a variety of mammalian orders come out on top when it comes to performing various tasks.

Bees live in complex colonies, dolphins have great memories and problem solving skills, and an octopus can “think” through its tentacles!

Primates are no slouches when it comes to intelligence in the animal kingdom either. They have large brains in comparison to body size, impressive visual acuity and color vision, dexterous hands (often with an opposable thumb), and a shoulder girdle that allows for a good range of arm movements.

Primates also utilize complex social systems to their advantage. They have long lifespans and slower rates of maturation, so social systems allow them to care for and protect vulnerable young. Primates are also well known for their utilization of tools, which is often spread via cultural learning – where members of the group adopt certain behaviors based on the observation or teachings of other members.

But regardless of measurements of intelligence, one thing’s for certain, no one enjoys doing trivia more than a human, so this one’s for you, primate! Er, that is of course except for perhaps the chimpanzee, who outperformed human test subjects during a study on memory. But a chimp is still a primate so the thesis still stands!
