Featured EyeWire: @nkem

A behind the scenes look at the EyeWire community.

nkem eyewireMeet the EyeWirers who are mapping the connectome. Up this week is Nico Kemnitz, aka @nkem, a top EyeWirer and ad hoc developer who you all know as the creator of the @nkem_bot

Greetings from Germany! My name is Nico – maybe better known as @nkem, my username on EyeWire and also at Chemnitz University of Technology. I got my bachelor’s degree in Applied Computer Science in February and now I am working on my master’s degree in “Intelligent Media and Virtual Reality.”

Why do you play EyeWire?

Your programmers used some of the very latest web features. That is awesome! EyeWire became some kind of reference book for WebSockets and WebGL to me 😛

And of course there are those other reasons that I am sure you hear much more often: You have an amazingly motivated and omnipresent team of admins and an intelligent, nice and funny community. Oh, and your game is just soooo relaxing!

How did you discover EyeWire?
A friend of mine sent me a link to a news article from December 21st that introduced EyeWire. Well… I was in crunch mode for my thesis and I needed some kind of “useful distraction.” That’s how I got here just some days after your official launch.

Share a short story that helps the world get to know you.

nkem_test codeYou may have noticed a rainbow-colored user that loves to answer new players questions with indefatigable determination and passion. That’s a small bot I wrote to make my life as one of the moderators easier 😛

I think, there is list of commands available here on the blog [yep – here it is]. Maybe I can extend his usefulness somewhen this summer/autumn… or switch to other useful EyeWire related projects 😉

Anything else you’d like to add?

 For Science!
[as @nkem_bot would say, For Science! – EyeWireHQ]
