Dog Days: Toys vs Terriers

It’s time for a battle of the (mostly) small dogs!

Toy dogs are what they sound like – small dogs whose main job is companionship and fun! They’re great for people in smaller city apartments and highly portable on planes, trains, and automobiles.dogs, toys, terriers, bench

Terriers don’t have small size as a requirement, but originally their main job was to hunt vermin, and smaller stature often helped with that. Terriers are often high spirited with lots of energy, and can also be stubborn, but still make lovable pets.

Interesting Toy dogs:

  • The Affenpinscher is a German dog who’s name means “monkey dog.” You can see why once you look at them, as they have the face and personality of a cheeky monkey!
  • Also known as the “lion dog,” the Pekingese is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. The breed was created in ancient China where only the Imperial family was permitted to own them. In more recent times the Pekingese has been been a player in some new crossbreeds with very fun names such as the Peekapoo (crossed with a poodle) and Peke-a-tese (crossed with a Maltese).

Interesting Terriers:

  • The Cairn Terrier is a scruffy little dog from the Scottish highlands. The Cairn’s name might sound familiar to hikers and for good reason! They were named for the piles of rocks that mark trails – and are also home to a variety of vermin that the Cairns were bred to flush out. This breed might also be familiar to movie goer – Toto from the Wizard of Oz was a Cairn Terrier!
  • The Airedale Terrier hails from Aire River Valley, England where it gets its name! It is the largest breed of the terrier group and is sometimes called the “King of Terriers.” Airedales shed very little or sometimes not at all, so if you’re hoping to retire your lint rollers, this might be the dog for you!
