Featured EyeWirer: Mario Marani
A behind the scenes look at the EyeWire community.
Meet the EyeWirers who are mapping the retinal connectome. This week’s Featured EyeWirer is Mario Marani.
Mario Marani aka “@mariomar” lives in in Bari, Italy, a beautiful city with a lot of history particularly in Middle Ages period. Until a few months ago, he was principal of a middle school; right now, at 63, he has retired as a citizen scientist.
Why do you play EyeWire?
For some years I have actively participated in citizen science projects as well as OpenSource software development projects. I am strongly interested in anything that can help to move forward science and technology albeit with a very small contribution. In particular, EyeWire allowed me to begin to know more about Neuroscience in general and, including the complex anatomical and functional system (as it is complicated!) that allows visual perception. Sebastian has also provided excellent reading recommendations.
How did you discover EyeWire?
I met Eyewire surfing the web and reading about new citizen science projects.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I think projects like Eyewire can help create informal learning with a view to Life Long Learning and to bring people to the sciences.
Finally, a hope that a participatory science, as that induced by Eyewire, can bring people and nations to create a prosperous future widespread.
