Eyewire 2018 Stats

Now that we stand in 2019, one step closer to completing The Dig, let’s look back on 2018. We asked in the forum what stats you wanted to see, and Eyewirers had some great suggestions! Here we’ve compiled a snapshot of 2018 by the numbers….

Eyewirers submitted 1.3 Million Cubes in 2018

Our biggest cube month was July with 173,320 submissions. From all those cubes in 2018, Eyewirers won 259,436,653 points.  Bazinga!

18,807 new players joined the rank of Eyewirer. 9,292 players contributed non-tutorial cubes to Eyewire.

Level 1-2 players submitted 558,685 cubes. Scouts, Scythes, and Mystics played 57% of all cubes (753,309).

Roughly 95,000 hours were spent playing Eyewire (from Start Playing –> Submit or Inspect –> Flag/Reap)

Cells for Days

Eyewirers discovered 6 new types of neurons in 2018 via a publication in Cell. Three have so far been named by the community: Hyperion, Theia, and Arachne. Looking forward to naming 3 more in 2019!

We completed 2,278 cells.  Roughly 1.2 cells were completed each day in Eyewire, coming to 617 retinal cells. Mystics completed 1,661 zebrafish cells, wow!

Largest cell of 2018: Artifact 11.1 at 4019 cubes

Smallest cell: Bipolar Field 10.85l, 24 cubes

Competitions

In 2018 there were 12 marathons, 24 team VS, 6 challenge weeks, and at least 168 Happy Hours.

9,767 players participated in competitions. This number includes duplicated players

The competition with the most participants was HH180 on June 7 with 223 people. We were more than a little surprised by this!

2nd post popular competition was the honeybee marathon during the Eyewire Brain Zoo with 215 participants.

Most popular Versus: Sleeping vs Being Awake with 93 participants (Being Awake won).

These competition numbers do not include our special competition, the Eyewire World Cup, which was won by team Antarctica.

Reminisce with some of the Eyewire Challenge Week art from 2018. Big shoutout to Daniela Gamba who has shown an uncanny ability to work neurons into pretty much any composition. She and I worked closely to translate Devon and Celia’s brilliant competitions into compositions that reflect the essence of Eyewire, especially with the art of Alice in Neuroland. For science!

Chatty Chat Chateyewire for science, for science, for science blue, ForScience black on light blue

For Science! was uttered almost every day, 313 times in 275,861 lines of chat.

Players won 11,222 badges!
