Flying Through the Human Brain in 3D
The extraordinary human brain is covered in gray matter called cerebral cortex, a six-layered zone of cells where computation happens. Beneath the shaded gray of cortex is white matter. This fatty volume is populated by insulated neuron fibers called axons that stretch vast distances, connecting one region of cortex with another. The animation above by Alfred Anwander reveals meandering fascicles – bundles of nerves – found deep within the white matter of the human brain.
