How to get Better at Eyewire

Click your username in the top right corner of Eyewire to bring up your profile and reveal your accuracy. Your accuracy is called F-Score and is comprised of two parts: over coloring (too much added) and under coloring (pieces missed). Hover your mouse over your Accuracy bar to see a drop down containing your personal mapping stats.

Over Coloring” is a calculation of the percentage of total volume added that was outside the cells you traced. This is referred to as Precision.

“Under Coloring” is a calculation of the percentage of total branches missed during mapping. This is called Recall.

The higher your F-Score (and the higher your Precision and Recall), the better you are at EyeWire and the more you help science. This translates into more science and more glory. And of course more chances to play trailblazers.

Amp Up Your Accuracy

 1. Branches almost always extend completely across the cube. If you don’t extend the branch to the edge of the cube, EyeWire will not spawn new cubes!

Sometimes you can’t see where a branch goes. In these cases, check out the view from different angles (use all 3 planes by changing orientation with the left/right arrow keys or by clicking the X, Y, or Z toggle button in the upper right corner) and try to make a smooth, continuous branch. Explore mode is useful here.

Zoom in the 3D view and scroll up/down in 2D by scrolling your mouse wheel or using track pad.

2. Neurons don’t have jagged edges. If the cube you’re mapping ends with a non smooth segment or has jagged sections along the side of the branch, it means there is more volume that should be added.  This tip will help improve your Recall.

3. Use the left/right arrow keys or by clicking the X, Y, Z toggle button in the upper right corner to move the axis of the 2D view.

Why does F-Score matter?

Remember, the cells you map in Eyewire are new scientific discoveries — we do not know what they look like until you have mapped them. Science depends on your accuracy.

We ensure accuracy by having multiple people map the same cube. If most players map it the same way, Eyewire accepts the branch as true (and spawns new cubes on branches that extend past the cube wall). If players add incorrect volume by coloring outside the lines, or worse, miss branches, the system doesn’t function well.

We know it can be difficult and sometimes seems impossible to see the correct branches. But you can do it! Below, check out tips and tricks that will take your Eyewire game to the next level.
