Arr, but here be no land at all. Sailin’ closer to the sight, ye realize it’s a mighty collection o’ ships engaged in combat o’ the nautical nature. Who could be engaged in such fiery warfare?
Lookin’ at the standards flown by the different fleets, ye count three:
This flag ye remember from a long-ago nightmare. Surely it belongs to Blackbeard himself, a man whose presence was so intimidatin’ that he barely had to do any fightin’ at all. When ye close yer eyes, ye see the memory of yer encounter off the Carolina coast, watchin’ the smokin’ fuses woven into his giant beard.
“Ah!” says ye. “A right classic here.” This be the flag o’ Calico Jack, but as ye peer through yer spyglass at this fleet’s lead vessel, ye see a woman wearin’ the captain’s hat. ‘Tis Anne Bonny, who sailed at Jack’s side but was a legendary swashbuckler in her own right. Though she were arrested for piracy, her fate be unknown; they executed Jack at Port Royal, and her sister-in-arms Mary Read died in prison, but not a soul knows what became o’ Bonny. She must have lived to fight another day!
‘Tis an odd thing here. Ye’d swear this to be the standard o’ the British Royal Navy. What sort o’ pirate flies this? But then ’tis clear. Many a pirate makes their livin’ as the “respectable” sort, a privateer employed by their country against others. Here be a fleet run by that Welsh privateer Captain Morgan, life achievements includin’ becomin’ Lieutenant Governor o’ Jamaica.
